I think sometimes people imagine that I don't know what it might be like to be you; what it might be like to be someone who is struggling. I’ll share with you—that’s just not true.
I really, truly know the pain and trauma that many of you are going through because I've experienced it myself. Growing up, I lived in a household where there was sometimes violence and where sometimes I was afraid we might be losing our home. One of my parents actually fought a lifelong battle and lost it with addiction. I know what it’s like to live in those situations growing up. Even in my early 30s, when I became a single mom, I knew what it was like to struggle. To live in an apartment where there was no heat and where I was feeling like I was failing my kids every single day. I know what that feels like because I was there.
When I tell you that, as your Delegate, I will put our community first, I mean it. I know how important it is that your voice is heard in Annapolis and that your needs are represented. I know that for us to have a strong, healthy community, we all need to be strong and healthy—not just a select few of us. One of the things that made me run for Delegate was that, in all of the years I've lived here, no state representatives ever knocked on my door and asked me what was important to me. It's time we changed that. It's time that every person in Hagerstown feels like they have a representative that's willing to listen to them and that knows the only way for our community to grow and improve is to build up our people.
You deserve a representative who's running because they want to represent you, not because they've been appointed to the position and want to hang on to power and prestige. You deserve a representative who decided to run because they knew it was the right thing to do.
